SELF GUIDED WALKING TOUR

This extraordinary six-day Amalfi Coast walking tour takes you the full length of the coast, without the need for buses or shuttles, starting in the romantic town of Ravello and ending in the breathtaking seaside town of Positano, with stunning views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea throughout. The tour begins with a private transfer from Naples (or Salerno) to Ravello, and concludes with a private transfer back to Naples (or Salerno).

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most spectacular regions in the Mediterranean, where dramatic mountains rise nearly 1,500 meters above the shimmering aquamarine sea. The whitewashed villages and towns appear to cascade down the steep mountainsides to the water’s edge, surrounded by vibrant colors, lush vegetation, and the warmth of lively locals.

The walks on this tour take you high above the bustling coastal towns, following ancient stone paths through shaded forests, remote farming communities, and centuries-old terraces. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline, with few other people in sight, before descending to the lively coastal villages each evening.

Naples and the surrounding Campania region are lands of contrasts, and this is reflected in the local cuisine. Here, humble and authentic dishes blend with the more refined culinary traditions of the nobility, which were influenced by French techniques. Campania gave the world iconic pasta dishes, including spaghetti, that are now staples of both Italian and international cuisine. However, the region’s food is much more diverse, especially along the Amalfi Coast, where the focus is on simple preparations that highlight the freshness of ingredients. These include exceptional vegetables and fruit grown in volcanic soils, along with abundant fresh seafood. Campania’s excellent wines, produced in areas such as Ischia, Capri, Vesuvius, and the Sorrentine Peninsula, also have a rich history dating back to ancient Greek and Roman times.

Generous breakfasts are provided each day to fuel your walks. We will offer a curated list of three to four recommended restaurants in each town or village, ranging from upscale to casual options. This information, along with booking links, will be available on the walking app, allowing you to easily plan your meals.

This is a Grade 3 walk, with routes taking between 3 to 5 hours. While the distances are relatively short, two of the walks involve paths that run about 400 meters above sea level, requiring a steep climb up old stone stairs at the start. To accommodate varying levels of fitness, we offer shorter, less strenuous alternative walks on Days 2, 4, and 5. Though the walks primarily follow well-marked, centuries-old trails, there are a few sections where extra attention will be needed. Full details for each walk are provided in the itinerary.

This is a continuous village-to-village walk, as this stunning coastline deserves. We provide private transfers from Naples to Ravello on Day 1 and from Positano back to Naples on Day 6. Your luggage will be transported each day, so you’ll only need to carry a daypack on the walks. You’ll stay in the best available accommodations within your chosen category, and while sea views aren’t guaranteed every night, we always request them (and usually succeed!). You’ll also have 24-hour phone support from our Florence-based team, along with access to an app with detailed walking notes. Additionally, you’ll receive a curated list of recommended restaurants in each town, from upscale dining to more casual options, complete with booking details and links.

Itinerary

Day 1

You will be picked up in a private vehicle at a time that suits you and driven from Naples (airport, hotel, or station) or Salerno railway station to Ravello. This stunning village, perched 350 meters above the Amalfi port, is renowned for its connection to Wagner, its beautiful gardens, and breathtaking views over the Gulf of Salerno.

Day 2

You have two options today. The first is a leisurely walk down stone paths to the coast, then along the shoreline to Amalfi, allowing plenty of time to explore this captivating town, one of the four great Maritime Republics (along with Venice, Genoa, and Pisa) that ruled the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. (2 hrs; 3 km; max: 368 m, min: 7 m)

For the more energetic, the second option is a longer walk through the remarkable Valle delle Ferriere, a national park featuring towering cliffs, shaded chestnut forests, waterfalls, and stunning views over the coast. (4 hrs; 13.5 km; max: 623 m, min: 10 m)

Day 3

Today’s walk takes you along an ancient trail that has connected villages for centuries. The route passes a monastery (now a luxurious 5-star hotel) before descending to a quaint hamlet perched above the sea, where you will spend the night. Below your hotel, you’ll find a hidden port with colorful fishing boats, a small pebbled beach (a favorite of Jackie Kennedy in the ’60s), and a charming bar. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to visit the renowned Grotta Smeralda. (2 hrs; 5.5 km; min: 15 m, max: 276 m)

Day 4

You have two trail options today. The first is a more challenging hike that begins with a steep ascent through villages and deserted hamlets. It then winds past churches with colorful ceramic domes, offering panoramic views before descending into a stunning fjord, where houses seem to cling to the rocks. The trail continues through a lush valley, leading you to your accommodation—a charming, family-run hotel with beautiful views across the gulf toward Positano. (4 hrs; 10.5 km; min: 76 m, max: 646 m)

The second, easier option follows a lower trail around the mountain, passing through the fjord and then climbing up to your accommodation. (3 hrs; 7 km)

Day 5

The locals call this route the “Via degli Dei” or Path of the Gods, and it’s easy to see why. Despite its fame and tourist appeal, the views along this path are truly breathtaking. The walk begins with a steep ascent from Vettica Maggiore, but once you reach the top, it’s all downhill to Positano, making the climb well worth the effort. (4 hrs; 10.5 km; min: 99 m, max: 616 m)

Day 6

After your final breakfast at the hotel, you will be driven back to Naples or Salerno at a time that suits you best in accordance to your next adventure!
