BOUTIQUE SMALL GROUP PACKAGE

Nicknamed the heel of Italy, Puglia, in Italy’s warm south, offers a charming laid-back atmosphere. The sun-baked land is dotted with fortified castles and whitewashed trulli, Puglia’s distinctive conical-shaped dwellings, and carpeted with a silvery sea of ancient olive groves. It also has an incredibly rich natural larder. The area produces most of the country’s extra virgin olive oil, excellent full-bodied wines and is famous for intensely flavoured olives, almonds and figs. Other specialities include orecchiette pasta, seafood risotto, fava beans and burrata, the supremely creamy cheese similar to mozzarella. You won’t go hungry between your painting holiday sessions here in Puglia.

Sights to savour with your artistic eye include the turquoise sea and long sandy beaches, as well as 13th-century Swabian castle, the city of Lecce’s Baroque churches, the port of Gallipoli, and Otranto cathedral’s amazing mosaic floor, the work of a 12th-century monk. There’s plenty of inspiration for sketching and painting, with help and advice from our resident tutor.

Villa Accommodation
We use two villas in Puglia. Casino Pisanelli is an old favourite, a lovingly restored 17th-century hunting lodge in rural Salento, converted into a luxurious country retreat. Its formal gardens, picturesque pool, and shady courtyards planted with lemon and orange trees are idyllic and perfect for delicious meals al fresco.

Our newer property, in the charming coastal town of Gagliano del Capo at Puglia’s southern tip, offers traditional baroque architecture with a very stylish contemporary twist in its spacious interior, and is simply stunning. Both villas and locations offer exceptional artistic inspiration.

Itinerary

Day 1: Group transfer to the villa.

Our group transfer will meet you at Brindisi Airport and take you to the villa for welcome drinks and time to relax before dinner prepared by our local chef.

Day 2: Your first painting session: watercolour techniques, and visit a beautiful local town.

This morning you have your first sketching and painting session with your teacher. This will include discussing the course outline, aims and expectations and getting started. In the afternoon, you will visit Santa Maria di Leuca, at the very tip of the Salentine Peninsula where the Ionian and Adriatic Seas meet. Enjoy an aperitivo and dinner in our favourite local trattoria.

Day 3: A day of painting followed by dinner at the villa.

This morning you will have another lesson at the villa, followed by lunch. Following lunch, there will be an outing to use the techniques. Return to the villa for dinner this evening, prepared by your chef.

Day 4: A day trip to explore Lecce, Puglia’s most splendid city, plus a stunning local cathedral.

After breakfast, the group will leave for a trip to Lecce – the ‘Florence of the South’, where you can sketch the town’s beautiful architecture and views. Lunch will be at a local trattoria. After lunch, we will visit Otranto situated by the sea, with the chance to visit the famous Cathedral with its beautiful medieval floor mosaic. Return to the villa for dinner.

Day 5: Today's painting session is about elements of composition and colour.

After breakfast, there will be a lesson in the elements of composition and colour. Lunch is served at the villa. The afternoon is free to enjoy as you wish and dinner will be prepared for you at the villa.

Day 6: Visit nearby Gallipoli, followed by dinner at an excellent local trattoria.

This morning, you’ll have another painting lesson around the villa, followed by lunch. You will then have a late afternoon visit to Gallipoli, on the Ionic sea, where you can sketch the fishing boats as they arrive and wander around the old town. Dinner will be at an excellent local fish restaurant.

Day 7: Spend today relaxing by the pool or painting.

Today is your final day of drawing and painting, with time to finish off your works and relax at the villa. Later this evening, we’ll have an exhibition of your artwork to the group, followed by a special farewell dinner prepared by your chef.
